The battle between Beowulf and Grendel began because the king of the Danes, Hrothgar, was throwing loud, joyous parties in his mead hall Herot with his fellow vikings and this awoke and angered Grendel. Being the demon monster that he was, Grendel decided that his best action was to kill and scare off all of the vikings from Herot. Grendel was such a strong force that no viking could stop him, that was, until Beowulf heard of him and decided to face him. Beowulf arrived in Herot with his men and began his plan against Grendel by throwing a party to lure him in. Once Grendel arrived, Beowulf surprised him and grabbed his arms using no weapons to fight him. The two fought each other, threw each other around and shook Herot. Grendel could not believe that a mortal being could be so strong but in fact Beowulf was just that strong because he was able to take the advantage and rip one of Grendel's arms off. Grendel then fled back to his lair in the Lake of Monsters to die. Beowulf kept his arm as a trophy.
